UNESCO Unique Exploration of Laos
Enjoy half day tour around the atmospheric town of Luang Prabang. Visit Wat Xieng Thong, the finest example of Luang Prabang architecture, Visit The Buddhist Archives present a permanent exhibition on Vipassana Meditation in Luang Prabang at Vat Khili, on the tip of the peninsula. The exhibition set up by the monks of Luang Prabang shows unique historical photographs and contemporary photographs by Hans Georg Berger. Access is free of charge. In addition visits to our holdings of historical photographs can also be arranged upon appointment. Continue to visit the National Museum, the former Royal Palace, where relics from Laos’ royalist past remain and visit Wat Siphoutthabath Tippharam, it is a beautiful temple located in the center of Luang Prabang. Its name signifies the temple of Buddha's marvelous footprint. The temple is very beautifully decorated and has numerous ornaments and drawings with Buddhist themes. Wat Siphoutthabath Tippharam, besides the temple itself, has a school for monks and novices. Then check in to climb the 328 steps up Phousi Hill for panoramic views of Luang Prabang city.
Later, travel a short distance to the stunning Kuang Si Waterfalls where you can take a swim. On the way stop to visit the Living Craft Center where to display about lao weaving & textiles before head up to the waterfall. The falls cascade over many calcified tiers and down several metres into a series of cool, turquoise pools. Then, visit the Sun Bear Reserve a conservation centre that rescues these furry creatures from the wildlife trade. On the way back stop to H'mong local village.
After breakfast at your hotel, travel by boat up the tea-coloured waters of the Mekong River to the Pak Ou Caves. The caves are home to hundreds of statues of Buddha, big and small, that have been left by devotees. You’ll be amazed to see how many are crammed in! You will have lunch on the Mekong Back restaurant.
Along the way you will stop at a riverside village to see weavers working on ancient looms before returning to town early in the afternoon.
Evening, we will transfer you to local family for doing Baci Ceremony. Baci (also spelt basi) is a special and unique ceremony in Laos which has been practiced for hundreds of years. The term commonly used is “soukhuan” which means “spirit enhancing or spirit calling”. The ceremony involves the tying of white cotton strings around the guest's wrists and prayers for the well-wishing of the guest. Then we will have dinner with local family.
After breakfast, transfer from Luang Prabang to Xieng Khuang on the mountainous and windy roads, stop along the way to visit local market and having lunch on your own account.
Then continue driving for another five hours, making stops at local villagers fishing for approximately one hour. Arrive in Phonsavan in the late afternoon.
Head to one of the most important prehistoric sites in Southeast Asia. These mysterious clusters of giant jars are thought to be about 2,000 years old. Sightseeing here will be a full day and involve walking over uneven terrain. You will visit Site 1 where there are over 200 jars, and Site 2 which also allows you to admire the beautiful scenery of the region. There will also be visits to Muang Khoune village, home of the H’mong minority group, and the office of the Mines Advisory Group (MAG), an organisation that helps clear unexploded ordnance that are a remnant of American raids during the Vietnam War.
This morning, visit the Tham Chang Cave before taking a walk through the dramatic countryside, where limestone karsts dominate the skyline. Admire the peaceful Nam Song River, which cuts through the valley of rice fields, and enjoy a river local boat along.
Afternoon visit blue lagoon where you could have many options for adventure activities: Ziplines, kayaking, rafting…
Return to the resort in the afternoon.
We leave Vientiane and travel to a small village on the edge of the national park. After exploring the village, we will spend some time with locals and enjoy a lovely traditional bamboo basket weaving session, where you will be able to create your own handicrafts. We then trek through an evergreen forest, slowly gaining elevation as we push deeper into the jungle.
Eventually we reach the scenic waterfalls of Tad Xay and Pha Xay, particularly beautiful during or just after the rainy season when they are in full flow, where we will enjoy a delicious picnic lunch. We have some free time at Tad Xay which has a great pool for bathing or swimming.
After relaxing under the waterfall, we drive back to Vientiane, where you can be dropped off at your hotel or in the city centre to explore the city’s night life by yourself.
Rise early for a morning flight to Pakse. On arrival drive to Champassak to visit the World Heritage-listed Wat Phou, a ruined Khmer temple complex located in the incredibly beautiful landscapes of Mount Phu Kao. Continue to Khong Island, the largest island of the Si Phan Don archipelago in the Mekong River. The afternoon is at leisure.
This day, visit Khone Island (Don Khon), largest island in the 4,000 Islands archipelago, is a great base to explore Khone Phapheng Waterfall. Take a scenic speedboat from nearby Mekong towns to Don Khon, where you can have a longtail boat for waterfall viewpoints. Don Khon also boasts the beautiful Liphi Waterfall for swimming.
Depart the khong Island to the Bolaven Plateau to pay a visit to a coffee plantation and learn about the process of planting, harvesting and roasting the beans. Arrive to the hotel in the early afternoon for checking in and enjoying the last night in Laos.
